Be Digusting

written in a garden, from some group musings on SLUGS: a manifesto by Abi Palmer

To be disgusting =

To raise disgust in others =

A primal fear response evolved to keep us safe

When did disgust for each other evolve? of our innate humanity, our natural state, of all that we live with?

To slug across the botanical gardens of Birmingham I chose to sneak in as a snake. Underfoot, no arms or legs to weigh me down, or decide to be too heavy to move. Elegant movement, solo travel. Maybe too solitary, what are the social states of snakes?

Do snakes dream of revolution?

The snake is depicted as treacherous - wasn’t it a snake who persuaded Eve and Adam to bite into the apple?

The fear of knowledge was passed down through the medieval trenches of Christianity, a snake proffering too many insights into the realities of our world.

I am that wise snake, saying the unsayable. Sneaking into places of power and saying what needs to be said.
